Deanne Chadwick-Higgins

Specialist Children’s Physiotherapist

Deanne qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2017 with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree from York St John University. She began her career as a rotational physiotherapist at Scunthorpe General Hospital where she gained vital experience treating patients with a number of respiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

Since 2018 Deanne has been working as a Children’s Physiotherapist at Harrogate District Hospital, where she treats patients on the children’s ward, in the Child Development Centre and also out in the community. Deanne regularly sees children in both mainstream and special schools to provide exercise programmes and offer advice to school staff in relation to symptom management and promoting independence. Deanne has a wide variety of service users on her caseload and regularly treats patients with neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and Congenital Disorders, as well as children with Developmental Delay or Musculoskeletal issues/injuries. Deanne also has experience of working with children who have undergone Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery.

Deanne runs weekly hydrotherapy sessions and a monthly exercise class in order to help children improve their range of movement, strength and stability.

Before becoming qualified as a Physiotherapist, Deanne worked as a swimming instructor from 2013 to 2017; it was during this role that she first began to work closely with children and young people. Deanne would regularly plan, develop and teach both group and one-to-one swimming sessions, as well as teaching school swimming lessons and leading parent and baby/toddler classes.

Deanne enjoys learning and regularly attends courses and conferences in order to keep her skills and knowledge base up to date, as well as discovering new ways to help engage children in therapy and make rehabilitation fun. Deanne thoroughly enjoys her career and loves working alongside parents, carers, school staff and other health professionals in order to help them achieve their goals.
