Jenny Stephenson

Specialist Children’s Occupational Therapist

Jenny discovered occupational therapy whilst trekking for 4 days with an experienced occupational therapist through northern Thailand. Jenny went on to qualify herself as an Occupational Therapist in 2009 with a MSc. (Pre-Registration) Occupational Therapy from Leeds Metropolitan University. Her first job was working in a community paediatrics setting with children with complex needs in schools, clinics, child development centres and in homes. After two years Jenny moved to mental health to further build on her clinical skills and experience. Within metal health she worked in adult inpatients, community, day hospital and the mental health trust Healthy Living service. After three years here Jenny further broadened her horizons by taking a career break for over a year and she travelled the world independently. Somewhere in-between Hawaii and Nepal Jenny decided that paediatrics was the specialism for her and when she arrived home returned to paediatric occupational therapy where she has remained very happily since.

Jenny has experience of working with children from 0-19 years and with a broad range of conditions including, cerebral palsy, developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD), autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and developmental delay.

Jenny has experience of working with both a ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’ approach and believes that as each child is different the approach to treatment needs to be individualised to ensure the occupational needs of the child are met successfully.

Jenny has experience of working with children with sensory needs and has completed the Sensory Integration Module 1; Foundations and Neuroscience. She also has vast experience of working with children with complex conditions using therapeutic intervention as well as assessment and provision of specialist equipment to enable independence, maintain and improve function of the child, support posture and reduce the risk of deformities and contractures as well as reduce moving and handling risk to family/carers. Jenny has vast experience working with a mainstream caseload and has CO-OP (Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance) accreditation (with lots of successes) which has enabled children to build on their independent living skills around dressing, eating, handwriting and bike riding. Within mainstream schools Jenny has experience of supporting children to access the curriculum by providing advice and support to teachers and pupils around; children’s handwriting skills, meeting any sensory needs in the classroom, assessment of equipment to meet children’s needs and moving and handling advice.

Jenny has two published articles in the ‘Occupational Therapy News’ and enjoys further building on her clinical skills in diverse ways to add to her knowledge and experience to enhance her input with families.

Jenny is an approachable, friendly and reliable occupational therapist who strongly believes in getting to know the children/families to make sure their needs are met and who uses her great problem-solving skills to meet children’s goals to enable as independent functioning as possible to ensure positive wellbeing for all involved.
