Emily Walton

Specialist Children’s Physiotherapy

Emily qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2015 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from the University of Huddersfield. She was keen to pursue a career in Paediatrics from her student experience but also from the years she has spent working with children as a ski instructor and helping with younger teams at her football club.

Emily first rotated between acute departments in Adult Neurology and Respiratory Medicine at Hull Royal Infirmary, before joining the Leeds Community Healthcare ICAN (Integrated Children’s Additional Needs) team over a year ago. Emily’s current caseload takes her to a variety of Mainstream, Resourced and Specialist schools and she also works with children and families in their own home and clinic settings. She leads frequent aquatic and rebound therapy sessions and has successfully been involved in a number of school holiday bike skills and intensive land based blocks. Emily also plays a role in training both school staff and carers in these specific therapies.

Emily has experience working closely with children aged 0-19 with a vast array of different conditions including: Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, Down’s Syndrome, Development Delay and other Chromosomal Abnormalities. Emily works within a large multi-disciplinary team to ensure there is a co-ordinated approach amongst those working with families in both the community and acute settings. These professionals include: Paediatricians, Inclusion School Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Orthotists. She is also involved in assessment with the company representatives of a wide range of equipment from standing and walking frames to sleep systems.

Emily tailors her approach by talking to the child and family about their interests. She uses her enthusiasm and creativity to make all therapy sessions fun to ensure the child remains motivated and happy. Emily always strives to do her best for the families she works with and will adapt her therapy to ensure it is specific and working towards a family centred goal.
